Why pause?

I've started and stopped blogs far too many times to count. I'm not sure why they don't survive - perhaps it's because I don't write about a particular "niche" of life; perhaps it's because I don't write about exciting things; perhaps it's because I get busy and forget to blog...and then I feel like an idiot picking it up again because I have to admit I screwed up. In short - I'm a perfectionist, and I don't like to mess up (not too much, anyway).

If there's one thing I've learned over the course of the past year, it's that being a perfectionist is pointless. It's setting oneself up for failure because - quite simply - no one is perfect, especially not a 20-something. We're still trying to "figure it all out" - which, arguably, never happens. Nonetheless, in this endless pursuit of whatever it is we're pursuing, I've learned the importance of taking a pause - a breve pausa, if you will.

Look around you; observe. Look inside yourself; reflect. Experience the moment that you are in right now. Embrace it. Quit thinking about tomorrow or the next week, month, or year. Relax. Simply enjoy what is happening in your life right now. These are the challenges that I have for myself - and if you know me, you know how hard it is for me to do all of these things.

So why do it? Because in these moments, we learn - both about ourselves and each other. Observation and reflection are powerful, and there are a multitude of life lessons hidden within us that they elicit.

This blog is a collection of my brief pauses - mia brevi pause - and the thoughts that come from them. I hope that maybe, if we're all lucky, we can both learn something from them. If nothing else, I hope to inspire others to take brief pauses of their own. Because we all know this world could use a little more quiet reflection.
